The North Coast 500, also commonly known as the NC500, is undoubtedly one of the most popular road trips in Scotland, if not the world. Often compared to America’s Route 66, it takes in some of the most beautiful beaches and mountain landscapes in the UK. Starting and finishing in Scotland’s Highland capital Inverness, the NC500 winds through remote regions and quaint fishing villages offering accommodation with breathtaking views and delicious local delicacies, from seafood to fresh baking. In this post we are sharing five of our favourite places to eat and stay on the NC500.
Newmore Highland Pods
Set just outside Invergordon in the quiet countryside of Easter Ross, Newmore Highland Pods offer a comfortable and peaceful base along the eastern stretch of the NC500. These modern, well-finished pods sit quietly away from the town and the busier feel of Inverness but still remain within easy reach of the route.
Each pod is thoughtfully equipped by owners Dawn & Hugh with a proper bed, ensuite bathroom, kitchenette and heating, offering a cosy, self-contained stay in all seasons. There are 6 pods, each with their own private outdoor decking area and hot tub. This location is perfect for visiting nearby sights on the Black Isle such as Chanonry Point to see the dolphins.
Cocoa Mountain
Cocoa Mountain is a stand-out highlight on the NC500 if you love chocolate. With two locations, one on the east coast in Dornoch and another on the north coast in Balnakeil, this doubles your chances to try out the delicious chocolates on offer at Cocoa Mountain. This award-winning bean to bar chocolate has become famous for its rich and indulgent hot chocolate and has to be tried alongside their handcrafted chocolates and decadent bakes.
Both cafes offer sit-in options, or you can enjoy as a takeaway by the beach.
Cheese n Toasted
Cheese n Toasted is the place to go if you are looking for delicious, gourmet, toasted sandwiches packed with flavour. This bright blue food truck is located on the north coast near tourist attractions such as Smoo Cave and is an ideal stop for lunch with a view.
Crofters Kitchen
Crofters Kitchen is Scourie’s award-winning coastal eatery serving up fresh seafood and local delicacies right beside the sea. Delicious, restaurant-quality local produce is served in this peaceful, relaxed setting in Scourie. Ingredients are sourced directly from local fishermen and crofters, so the menu is shaped by the seasons and changes daily depending on availability of fresh foods.
Sango Sands Oasis
Perched on the cliffs above the north coast near Durness, Sango Sands Oasis Campsite offers one of the most scenic places to stay along the NC500. With uninterrupted views over the Atlantic and direct access to Sango Bay below, this is a spot you don’t want to miss. The site caters for motorhomes, campervans and tents with well-maintained facilities and pitches that make the most of the dramatic coastal setting. This campsite is a perfect base for exploring the sites along the north coast and it is worth booking ahead if you want a front row pitch during peak season as it books up fast.
The NC500 has many more incredible places to eat and stay along the route that you should try during your road trip. Remember to leave no trace and enjoy the beautiful scenery that Scotland has to offer. We hope that you will enjoy this beautiful part of our country so much that you will want to return again and again.
