Want to encourage parents to keep your pupils hooked on books over summer? There are plenty of tips and tools on the Book Squad parents page where parents can get inspiration for how to maintain an enthusiasm for books and reading over summer.

We have put together a sample email to send to parents, using some of these resources. Feel free to adapt and send out to parents before the end of term!

Dear [Parent's Name],

I hope this message finds you well and excited for the summer ahead!

As we approach the holiday break, I wanted to take a moment to highlight how we can keep pupils engaged with books and reading over the next six weeks.

Even dedicating just 10 minutes a day to reading with your child can inspire increased engagement in books. Research consistently shows that children who read or are regularly read to not only excel academically but also cultivate stronger family bonds, are more creative, and have improved emotional wellbeing.

In our classroom, we are actively fostering a love for reading through a variety of engaging initiatives, including [insert specific initiatives such as reading circles, book fairs, author visits, or themed reading weeks]. These efforts aim to inspire our pupils and deepen their connection to books.

As we head into the summer holidays, we greatly appreciate your support in maintaining this enthusiasm for reading. It’s essential to keep the momentum going over the next six weeks, ensuring that our pupils remain excited about books and storytelling.

We understand that finding time, selecting the right books, and feeling confident reading aloud can sometimes be daunting. However, I encourage you to explore the resources available at Collins' Book Squad website: collins.co.uk/booksquadparents. This site offers a wide range of quick, practical ideas designed to make reading enjoyable and accessible at home.

From allowing your child to choose their own books to employing simple storytelling techniques, these tips can transform reading into a delightful family activity that everyone will cherish. There are also curated reading lists by age and interest, which can help with selecting the best titles to read next.

Thank you for your continued support in encouraging a classroom-wide love for reading. Wishing you and your family a joyful and enriching summer filled with stories and adventures!

Warm regards,
