Be Resilient Be You is a brand-new book, published by Collins, and written by well-being author and psychotherapist Becky Goddard-Hill.

The book focuses areas where teens may need a little extra guidance and support to enable them to feel strong and develop the coping strategies they will need to handle the often-turbulent teen years.

Why we need this book?

A recent report on mental wellness from NHS England discovered that 20.3% of eight to 16-year-olds struggled with their mental health and that this percentage is continues to rise throughout the teen years.

We know, from research, that building up young people’s resilience is a hugely protective factor when it comes to their emotional health and wellbeing and that the sooner we start with this the better protected they are.

What is resilience and why is it important in the teen years?

Resilience is the ability to cope with challenges that come along without feeling defeated or overwhelmed by them. It is the ability to bounce back, pivot, adapt and grow rather than being knocked down and staying down. The more resilient you are the better placed you are to handle pressure and stress, and pressure and stress go hand in with being a teen.

From exam stress and peer pressure, social media comparison and romantic relationships, ranging hormones and changing bodies – the teen years are uniquely tough and teens need to be pretty tough too.

What’s in the book?

Be Resilient Be You contains 40 topics / issues that impact teens such as studying, lack of control, high expectations and changing friendships. It covers ways to have more resilient thoughts, actions. bodies and relationships and will help to strengthen a teen from the inside and out.

Each topic shares research or neuroscience to explain what is happening as well as guidance around coping more robustly. Each topic also comes with a motivational quote and a short activity to help a young person practice the resilient skills or mindset they need.

But what if my teen doesn’t read?

Be Resilient Be You is a purposefully accessible book. The topics are short, straightforward and engaging and it contains cool graphics throughout. It can be dipped into as and when and read in any order. It isn’t a daunting or overwhelming book but instead contains bite sized nuggets of advice to help a teen to help themselves.

It also contains an important section on asking for help; how, where, when and why they should do this.

It is there to support your teen and for them to use as and when they need it.

Let’s give our teens the coping tools and insights they need to navigate the times ahead and make the very best of them.
