Week 9: Getting creative

This week has been lots of crafting after the excitement of ordering a glue gun! The things lockdown has done to me! We made a rainbow wreath using half a polystyrene circle and a bag of pom poms. The craft was just the start though as we then went on to have some learning opportunities come from it which is a great reminder that learning takes place in many guises.

Erin needed to use Maths to split the wreath into sections, this gave us an opportunity to talk about fractions as well as measuring. The crafting can pass as D&T and she loved doing this as rainbows are such a symbol of hope during coronavirus. Erin was so proud that she showed her grandparents via Facetime and of course I blogged it on Emma and 3 and shared on my social media channels. As a direct result of that, Erin was asked to make a couple for people we know. Before Erin agreed, I tasked her to work out the cost of making the wreath and what she should charge for making it for others. It seems that I have a budding entrepreneur on my hands, and it was certainly a good lesson in Business Studies and personal finance as she considered the cost of resources, plus a fee for her time.

In our literacy lessons I had to dig deep to find some new ideas as I felt that we had done the standard letter writing and diary writing. As Erin was enjoying drawing, I used a template for a story board and got her to create a cartoon strip for the book she was reading with captions. This is an important and worthwhile task as it shows recall and being able to put events in order. You could do this with historical events too as a timeline. Being able to recall like this demonstrates that the child is reading for meaning and not just reading the words. When children are younger, they often read the words without considering a story, even good readers do this. Collinshave some great free resources on their website for story books. You can either read the book and do the prepared activities or use the ideas for the books that you are reading!

We also made a story cube which, again, included some practical maths, as first Erin had to cut out the net and make the cube. We talked about the properties of 3D shapes as she made this. The cube had a picture on each face, but you could easily cut out and stick on your own. She then rolled the dice and made a poem based on what she rolled. We did a quick recap on the features of a poem first to ensure that she used them in her writing.

As you can see, it has been a great week for home learning, and I can see what I have covered with Erin has really helped with her self-confidence. I have enjoyed reading the texts that I am choosing for her and being able to have an input into what she is learning. I know that we are all missing family and friends but this period of home learning will always be remembered and, although right now it feels like forever, when things are more normal I think many will reflect on what an amazing opportunity we had to connect with our children and make a difference to their learning.
